I thought it would be beneficial to share reading lists within this group. A friend recently asked what books I have in my library that have guided my path. These have inspired me or guided me in one way or another over the last 15 years as my work has developed. I am open to discussion on why a book may or may not be worthy of being shared here as well - i.e. It is sharing false knowledge.

I included books on meditating with sound, acoustics, sound therapy, mystical qualities of music, working with instruments, tuning, meditation and healing. I apologize for not adding the publisher.

I am more interested in where this will go - what your reading lists are.

Hi Crown of Eternity (Do I know you by another name?)

Here's my list from my bio buried somewhere on my website. (Many are the same as yours.)
Looking it over I realize I need to update it a bit as it's probably about four or five years old.
Also, just because a book is on this list doesn't mean I agree with everything written in it.
(Some I may have evolved over time to agree very little with.)

I should also include my last book: "The Sound Inside The Sound: Spirit Medicine for a Renewed Earth Consciousness" which can be found at my website.

Also, not all of these books are about sound and/or music, but I decided to copy and paste the whole list.
I see a well rounded, in depth and expansive working with the Energy Medicine of Sound to be something that involves a lot more than just working with sound!

The Mysticism of Sound and Music, Hazrat Inayat Khan
The Music of Life, Hazrat Inayat Khan
The Healing Power of Sound, Mitchell L. Gaynor, M.D.
Toning, Laurel Elizabeth Keyes
The Yoga of Sound, Russill Paul

Healing Sounds, Jonathan Goldman
Human Tuning, John Beaulieu
Through Music To The Self, Peter Michael Hamel
Healing With Sound, Color and Movement, Fabien Maman
The Magic of Tone and the Art of Music, Dane Rudhyar
Shakti Mantras, Thomas Ashley-Farrand

The Healing Drum: African Wisdom Teaching, Yaya Diallo & Mitchell Hall
Drumming at the Edge of Magic, Mickey Hart w/ Jay Stevens
Planet Drum, Mickey Hart w/ Fredric Lieberman
Spirit Into Sound: The Magic of Music, Mickey Hart & Fredric Lieberman

The Way of Qigong, Kenneth S. Cohen
Qigong Empowerment, Master Shou-Yu Liang & Wen-Ching Wu
The Healing Promise of Qi, Roger Jahnke
Embrace Tiger Return to Mountain, Chungliang Al Huang
~ Taijiquan, Yang Yang

The Secret Teachings of Plants, Stephen Harrod Buhner
Honoring The Medicine, Kenneth Cohen
Entering The Circle, Olga Kharitidi
The Master of Lucid Dreams, Olga Kharitidi
Shaman, Healer, Sage, Alberto Villoldo
The Bushman Way of Tracking God, Bradford Keeney
A Separate Reality, Carlos Castaneda

Good, glad you are here, Mike!

Regarding the books, I highly recommend the Stephen Harrod Buhner book, The Secret Teachings of Plants: The Intelligence of the Heart in the Direct Perception of Nature. (Not to be confused with The Secret Life of Plants.)

I find it very inspirational and expansive and think it might be for others on this path as well. Deepening our connection with nature I think is vital for any healing work, and certainly with sound healing.

I've also got his new one, Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm, (subtitled 'Beyond the Doors of Perception into the Dreaming of the Earth'.... yeah, he puts a lot of selling points in his titles!) though haven't dug into it enough yet to really be able to say anything about it.

Very good, I had gotten my wife The Secret Teachings of Plants for her birthday a few years back. I have not read it but it is in the house.

One author common to both our lists is Hazrat Inayat Khan.
I'm not sure I'd call any of these books "essential reading", but if I did I'd probably choose his books.

I enjoy immersing my mind in his perceptual/conceptual world. (And it's 90-100+ year old material)

Another one that was very significant to me is Through Music To The Self, by Peter Michael Hamel,
if for no other reason than it was the first, and came to me way before all of the others.
It's been so long since I read it, 30+ years, that I really can't give a review or critique of it now
or know where I stand in relation to its content.

Mike, do any on your list stand out as "essential"?

Well a few of these have been pretty huge for me. I was fortunate enough to discover John Cage at a somewhat early age. Silence was huge for me when I was 17 - 18 years old and it has remained something that I have retruned to over and over again.

Hazrat Inayat Khan was also very influential on me around the same time. These days I actually spend a lot more time reading Vilayat Inayat Khan and listening to his lectures. He speaks of a universal nature of human beings that touches me deeply.

Don Campbell's books were my first exposure to Sound Healing. I am not sure that I would recommend them as a place to start for anyone or even if I would still like them if I read them now. What I really loved about them was that they did not tell you not to listen to certain types of music - or that music that was not New Age was dangerous. Rather to be conscious of how what you are listening to is affecting you emotionally. He said that even Heavy Metal and Gangster rap can have therapeutic value. He allowed for the cathartic experience to be valid, which I feel is important still. It was more about the consciousness you were bringing to the listening experience.

In hind-site, I was probably most affected by Randall McClellen's The Healing Forces of Music. A lot of what I taught in my early sound and meditation courses was based off of that book. It also gave me permission to explore my creativity with how I was putting those classes together.

Genesis of a Music was fascinating to me on many levels. I had to read the Just Intonation Primer to understand it. Both were beneficial to my understanding of tuning and scales.

A few books that blew the lid off things for me that are not on this list were Michael Nyman's Experimental Music: Cage and Beyond, Swami Muktananda's Play of Consciousness and Space is the Place: The Life and Times of Sun Ra.

This is a good start on a recommended book list for everyone visiting the forum. Way to go Rich and Mike. Some of these are on my reading list for my Sound Therapy training module, and many (almost all) are in my personal library. People new to the concept of Sound Therapy/Sound Healing will get a good start on their journey with these books. For those of you deeply embedded into research, I suggest you always go straight to the bibliography and look this over. I pass on reading many books because I'm not impressed with the resources that the author used.

Re: checking the bibliography. There have been a number of recent ebooks that I purchased only to find out that Dr. Leonard Horowitz was one of the main sited sources. What a disappointing discovery that was! Needless to say, I decided not to follow through and read those books. My time is more valuable than my money!

Yesterday I had purchased - The Sound of Healing: Unveiling the Phenomena of Whole Tones assuming it was going to be about Just Intonation. He seems to be more on the 528 side of things. There is a section on Goebbels, so you know it is going to be something. Not sure why I did not preview this one first.

Ah yes, the "well-documented" Goebbels connection......

The thing that intrigues me about the title is the implication that there is some mystical and hidden "phenomena" of whole tones waiting to be revealed. It doesn't intrigue me in regard to believing there is in fact some mystical healing property in whole tones that I've missed my whole life, but in regard to what the actual claim is that the author is making.

For non-musicians, a 'whole tone' is the interval of a Major Second, or two half-steps on a keyboard. Steely Dan liked to put Major 2nds into their chords which was part of their destinctive sound. Play an open voice C-major triad: C-G-E. Now add a 'D' one whole tone below the top 'E': C-G-D-E...... instant Steely Dan!

I also loved the way Gentle Giant would use whole tone harmonies.
Actually, to be clear, I think it is a great interval and I do use it and love its effect in my sound practice......but is the author proposing that whole tones are the 'true' sound of healing?

Well, I'm not intrigued enough to purchase the book, particularly considering his attention to Goebbels and 528.... just curious what he had to say about it..... (and veering off the topic of the thread, sorry!)

Does anyone out there have a scanned copy of The Healing Power of the Gong by Johannes Heimrath, that they wouldn't mind sharing?

Everyone recommends this book, but since it's been out of print for years many of us have never had a chance to read it, & can't afford the prices that rare second hand copies usually sell at.

I know what I'm asking is probably illegal, but just thought I'd put it out there....

(I have actually emailed the author asking about the possibility of a reprint but never received a reply...)

Lisa

edit:  Huge thanks to the kind person who sent me a scanned copy [smile]

Hi Michael,

Both of these books on your list:
Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind - Shunryu Suzuki
The Book - Alan Watts

were important books for me very early on the path. In fact it was Alan Watts' The Wisdom of Insecurity that was the first "spiritual book" I ever read. I also named my first world music group 'Beginner's Mind' and then made it the name of my record label/production company, Beginner's Mind Productions.
